Cholesterol is a lipid in the body which protects nerves, cell tissues and produces certain hormones. When cholesterol is excessive, it induces blood vessel blockages. This can make the heart's job more difficult, resulting in elevated blood pressure. Cholesterol deposits can lead to plaque buildup in blood arteries, which can then break off and create a clot.
What Causes It?
In the recent times, high cholesterol has become a common ailment due to factors like sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy diet and increased rate of obesity.
However, high cholesterol can be also caused by medical conditions like chronic kidney disease, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, Hypothyroidism and Lupus.
Remedies for High Cholesterol
- It is recommended to maintain a kapha-pacifying diet.
- Garlic is thought to be the most effective in lowering cholesterol. Combine one finely chopped clove of fresh garlic, half teaspoon grated ginger root, and half teaspoon lime juice; consume this concoction before each meal throughout the day.
- Make a tea with one teaspoon cinnamon and one-fourth teaspoon trikatu. Steep it for 10 minutes in a cup of water, then add one teaspoon honey and drink. Taking it twice a day is said to help.
- Taking half a teaspoon trikatu with one teaspoon honey two to three times a day may be beneficial for burning ama (digestive fire) and excess kapha, as well as regulating cholesterol.
- The herb Chitrakadivati is also believed to regulate cholesterol levels in the body.
- Guggul is said to have a strong effect on lipid tissues. It contributes to an optimal lipid profile by helping regulate the cholesterol levels in the body.
- Regular physical activity and a balanced diet may help sustain health cholesterol levels in the long run.
According to Ayurveda, there are 20 forms of diabetes (prameha): four caused by Vata, six by Pitta, and ten by Kapha. However, it is largely a Kapha dosha ailment. The life sap is lost from the body as a result of urine discharge in diabetes mellitus.
Excessive urination, urine sweetness, and a sweet sensation in the body are the three basic symptoms of diabetes.
What Causes It?
- Dhatukshaya: It is a form of juvenile diabetes caused by dhatus or tissue loss.
- Avarana: Increased Kapha Dosha or other tissues such as fat or muscle create channel blockage. Diabetes at a later age may arise as a result of this.
Remedies for Diabetes
- Detoxification: Toxins can impede digestion and build up in the body, causing diabetes-related imbalances. Hence, panchakarma procedure may be beneficial.
- It is suggested to avoid sugar, fruits or vegetable with high sugar content, rice, potato, banana, cereals, mangoes, pears, grapes, and other similar foods.
- Including bitter foods and green leafy vegetables in your regular diet, such as bitter gourd, spinach, kale, gooseberry, black gramme, soy products, etc. is recommended.
- Herbs: Amla, turmeric, saptrangi, vizaysaar, bilwa, tulsi, gudmar, fenugreek, neem, guggul, triphla, and cinnamon powder may be help alleviate diabetes symptoms.
- Yoga: Pranayama, Surya Namaskara and yogasanas like Trikonasana, Bhujangasana, Shalabhasana, and Pavana Muktasana is deemed beneficial.

Remedies for Obesity
- Adopting a mild, long-term weight loss plan instead of crash diets may be productive.
- Dosha reducing therapies with a light diet, fasting, digestive herbs, mild laxatives, and tonics like guggul (1 gram, thrice daily) or shilajit (1/2 gram twice daily) may help.
- Vata: Avoiding refined sugar, reduce intake of hot spices, and take sweet digestive herbs like cardamom, coriander, brahmi, jatamanshi, and ashwagandha may benefit.
- Pitta: Taking raw salads and bitter laxatives to counter sugar, ingesting herbs like aloe vera, katuka, turmeric and bhuamalaki and avoid meat, fish, oily, greasy, fried or sugary foods is suggested.
- Kapha: Staying away from refined sugars, salt, dairy, cold liquids and oils may be helpful. Adding hot spices, vegetable juices, steamed vegetables, beans and whole grains to the diet is said to be beneficial.
- Avoiding naps and maintaining a workout routine to boost your metabolism may help with problem in long haul.
